Studio Visit

Since I can't front the $40 entry fee to apply to New American Paintings, I decided to scramble at the last minute to submit to Steven Zevitas' Studio Visit publication instead-- free of charge! There's a publication fee if selected, but that doesn't bother me. Since a friendly e-mail reminder informed me that the postmark deadline was today, I ran frantically around Boston all morning getting the submission together, which was luckily a pretty simple submission. (Late entry deadline is August 7. $10 late entry fee. Here is the prospectus.)

Last Tuesday I spent the better part of the day photographing some of my larger pieces outside in the sun since they are nearly impossible (without many hours and many contraptions) to get good pictures of otherwise. I was doing this in preparation for the Fractured Atlas featured member profile which is scheduled for August 14th. There will be a question-and-answer segment on me and my work plus some photos. Even after lots of physical and digital adjusting, I'm having tons of trouble photographing First Born. Suggestions anyone?

The background is basically canvas-colored, so it shouldn't look white, but it's hard to get it not to look blue or gray. If I try to adjust the white levels, it loses some of those faint background layers. Help!

The reason for all of this gabbing is that unfortunately I couldn't use First Born in my Studio visit submission because the print of the piece (even done professionally at Copy Cop-- my new favorite place) was blue. So blue that it looked like I had painted it blue. Ugh! I decided to use Glurst and Et Cetera, both below, (most recent piece, not sure if it's finished or not) in my submission.

I had some fun photographing last Tuesday.
