A week or two ago, I posted an image and description of my painting First Born which I had hung in the hallway of Mass Art for consideration for the All School Show (here). My work was not chosen by the juror but later added to the show by (I'm guessing) the 2D faculty. My
studio teacher, Kofi Kayiga, was amazed by the story... at first we both admitted to being surprised about my work not being selected (not in an arrogant way; he had mentioned to me earlier in the week that the faculty had been following my work, something I didn't realize, and we agreed that it's both strong and different from the majority of the other students', making it a good candidate for the show). He insisted that I was so "cosmically aligned" with my work and that my vision of it in the show was so strong that it somehow found its way into the show even after not being selected. Another great conversation. He explained the intimacy of artist and artwork in a different way than I have (I have been comparing it to the relationship between mother and child), saying instead that an artist's connection with his or her work combined with confidence and solidity show through the work and essentially overcome any sense of failure, and in some instances (like this one), persevere limitation. Below are some photos of First Born in the All School Show. The opening is Wednesday March 18 from 6-9. I can't go because I have class between those exact hours.
Congratulations on being a part of the show!
