"Online Exhibitions"

What is becoming of the "art world" (I can't stand that term) as we know it?

What, I beg you, is the allure of online exhibitions?

I'll even skip the obvious point that looking at an image of a painting in 2D subtractive light is absolutely nothing comparable to viewing the same painting in person.

When I'm searching calls for artists online (which are completely dilated with nonsense at this point; someone please take on the responsibility of managing a user-friendly list comprised of reputable opportunities!) and I select a possibility, then waste my time reading halfway through the description only to find that I'm reading about an online exhibition, my mind immediately screams, "SCAM!"

Why would any artist apply to this? ESPECIALLY considering they all have entry fees comparable to actual physical shows! First and foremost, who's to say that Joe Computernerd out in Hisparentsbasement, Ohio won't accept every single entry made, create a simple-as-nothing "online exhibition" using images that the artists should be more protective of copyright-wise and reap the benefits... $35 for up to 3 entries submitted by thousands of desperate or young artists who don't know better?

...Hmm, maybe Joe Computernerd is onto something...
