Alberto Burri on writing about his work

In beginning to write artist statements, it's easy veer off-track into a conversation about how it is difficult to write artist statements and blame this on the fact that our tendency is toward visual art, and if we were writers instead, it would be language. Alberto Burri understands this. In “Words Are No Help” (1955), he writes,

“[My painting is] an irreducible presence that refuses to be converted into any other form of expression… My painting is a reality which is part of myself, a reality that I cannot reveal in words."

(If you want to read more on artist statements, Joanne Mattera just posted a great article on rethinking them.)
